Tired of being a rule follower? When you’re done being told who to be

Have you ever felt like you’re supposed to follow a certain path, but deep down it just doesn’t feel right?

Like the world is telling you who you should be, but a voice inside of you keeps whispering:

“Something feels off.”

So many of the women I work with have spent years living by everyone else’s ideas of who they should be.

The good one. The reliable one.

Doing what’s expected at their age and stage of life, even when it never quite fit.

Somewhere along the way, their own voice got very quiet.

I know that feeling well.

I spent a long time trying to fit into a mould that wasn’t truly me.

And then my friend Isa in Belgium (a talented artist) shared something that stopped me in my tracks:

I’m tired of being told to play by the rules. It takes courage to trust your own way when the world keeps telling you to adjust. At some point, you have to ask yourself: Whose voice am I listening to? The world’s? Or my own?

Yesssss! This really hit home.

Because I’m tired of being a rule follower.

And I’m tired of all the labels that try to tell us who we should be.

When really, it’s about what feels right, to us.

A month in Puerto Escondido, Mexico a while back helped to clarify this for me…

It reminded me that age doesn’t matter!

Because there’s this unspoken rule that says:

“At a certain stage of life, you’re supposed to stick with people your own age.”

Yet I didn’t follow that rule when I was in Mexico.

Instead I spent time with people of all ages, because I LOVED their energy.

Their excitement, curiosity, and zest for life made me feel even more alive.

More like the real me.

So if age doesn’t matter, what does matter?

How we feel in our own skin. How we treat ourselves.

How much joy and happiness we let in.

And let me tell you, I felt so happy being my authentic self there.

Connecting with people of all ages.

And feeling free to embrace what lights me up.

That feeling of freedom and joy was the final push I needed to break some rules.

When I returned home I made some BIG changes to my coaching business.

I jumped headfirst into rewriting my website and coaching services.

Starting with a label that never fit me.

The term midlife coach never quite sat right with me.

I tried to embrace it, but it always felt too limiting, like I was supposed to fit into a certain box.

Or only speak to a specific stage of life.

But that’s never been how I see things. Nor how I coach.

It took that moment of clarity in Mexico for me to finally stop letting a label tell me who to be.

For me, it’s not about age. It’s about how we live.

→  What brings us joy?
→  What fills us up and energizes us?

But sometimes, we get so caught up in following the rules that we forget to ask ourselves:

What rules have we been following that no longer fit who we truly are?

What’s one small step we could take today to break free and start trusting our own way?

When we stop living by someone else’s rules, we open up space to reconnect with what truly matters.

That’s when joy starts to find its way back in.

So let’s take a moment to reflect on your rules…

  • Whose voice am I listening to: the world’s, or my own?
  • What’s one rule I’ve been following that I never actually chose?

I’m here to help you reconnect with what matters most to you.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about being a rule follower…

It’s about creating a life that feels right for YOU.

Here’s to breaking free from any rules holding you back…

And choosing your own authentic path.
