The other day, my friend brought up one of my favourite New Year’s traditions: choosing an inspiring word.
It’s something I’ve been doing for years.
Choosing one word to guide me through the year.
And keep me on track.
So I live my life based on my highest values.
You see, I don’t do resolutions anymore.
‘Cuz when I have in the past, I realized how futile they were.
And how self-punishing.

It was nice knowing you.
But I think it’s time for you to go now.
Don’t get me wrong.
I learned a lot from you.
And I’m surprisingly grateful.
You were a very difficult, yet wise, teacher.
Because of you, I learned the simple things in life are the most important.

While doing my yoga practice this morning I was reminded of these wise and powerful words from Yoga with Adriene:
“Keep what makes you happy. Let go of what doesn’t serve you.”
If the Great Pause of 2020 has taught us anything, I believe it’s exactly that.
That as a result of having to slow down and sit with our own ‘stuff,’ we learned — very quickly — what did and didn’t work for us.
What made us happy.
And what didn’t.

By now you’ve probably heard about the Law of Attraction. But have you ever heard about the Law of Reflection?
It’s another Universal law stating that what we see ‘out there’ (in other people and in life) is also ‘in here’ (in us).
That we act as mirrors for one another.
So whatever I can see in you must also be in me.
Or as the great Sufi poet Rumi wrote 700+ years ago:
“The beauty you see in me is a reflection of you.”

Have you ever heard the saying: the seeds you sow, grow? Or Tony Robbins’ version “energy flows where your focus goes?”
While some people may think all this energy talk is a bit woo-woo, I believe in it whole-heartedly.
It’s why I practice gratitude.
In my experience the more I focus on the things that light me up — really acknowledge them and feel grateful for them — the more they expand and grow.
Into something more beautiful than I could imagine.

I love this image of the jellyfish in the sea. It makes me think of the word “silence.”
And the moment I first realized what a wonderful gift silence is for a sensitive person like me.
I was on vacation in Hawaii and was going scuba diving for the first time.
To say I was nervous going into the sea, with all my diving gear on, is an understatement.
That is until I reached the sandy ocean bottom.

I learned this lesson the hard way.
To stop waiting for someone else to save me.
To make my life better.
It was no one else’s job but my own.
But that’s not what I was taught.
I was taught to be a “good girl” and do what I was told.
To grow up and get married and have kids.

One of my favourite proverbs to help me move forward is:
The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.
It makes me realize how easy it is for us to get stuck in the past.
“I should’ve planted that tree (followed that dream!) 20 years ago. I can’t believe I wasted all that time! What was I thinking?”
So we end up beating ourselves up.
For all the time we wasted and for what “could’ve been.”
