Small steps lead to big changes. It sounds simple. Maybe even a little obvious.
But if you’ve ever felt like your life needed to shift and the standard advice was to “take the leap” or “go all in,” you’ll know that for a lot of women, that advice doesn’t land.
What if you can’t afford to blow it all up?
What if there are people counting on you? Bills that need paying? And a margin for risk that’s basically zero?
That’s been my own reality for most of my adult life.
And it’s where I learned — slowly, out of necessity — that small steps aren’t the consolation prize for women who can’t do the big thing.
They’re actually the method.
When the bold moves aren’t available to you
For years I raised my son on my own.
One income. A mortgage. No partner to split the bills or catch me if I stumbled.
The “burn it all down and start fresh” approach that gets talked about so enthusiastically in self-help circles? Wasn’t an option for me.
So I figured out something else.
I’d get clear on what I actually wanted — not the whole picture, just the next thing. Then I’d take one small step toward it. Then another. And another.
That became my method. Not because I read it in a book, but because it was the only way I could actually move forward.
What small steps actually look like in real life
I’ve been doing it again lately.
Working from home is wonderful — I love the freedom — but it can get isolating for someone who genuinely needs to be with people.
My body was craving more movement. My soul was craving more connection.
So I started asking:
What do I actually want? What would feel fun?
I signed up for pickleball lessons at my community centre. No vision board required. I just knew I wanted to move my body and be around others.
Now I play most weeks in the park with a whole new group of friends.
I added aquafit on Wednesday mornings because I’ve always loved the water.
I volunteered as a greeter at the grand opening of my new community centre.
I booked a warm vacation next winter with my big sister.
I bought an e-bike.
None of these required courage, a commitment, or a plan. Just one small yes at a time.
Why this works (even when it feels too small to matter)
Here’s what I notice with my clients, and what I’ve experienced myself…

The small step doesn’t just move you forward practically. It does something to your sense of agency.
The moment you register for the class, book the trip, make the call — something clicks. Like you’re back in the driver’s seat of your own life.
And that click matters. Because it’s often the thing that makes the next step feel possible.
Small steps lead to big changes not because each step is dramatic, but because each one rebuilds your self-trust.
And that trust is what everything else grows from.
You don’t need everything figured out before you start moving
One of the most common things I hear from women I work with is some version of:
I’ll start when things settle down.
When the kids are older. When work is less crazy. When I have more free time.
I understand that impulse. I really do.
But the waiting rarely ends. And the life you want doesn’t suddenly become easier to move towards just because circumstances shifted.
What tends to work better is asking yourself this one small question:
What’s one thing I can do — something small enough that my inner critic doesn’t argue back — to move in the direction I want to go?
That’s it. That’s the whole method.
Not a reinvention. Not a big leap. Just a tiny tweak.
Start where you are, with what you have
If you’re at a point where the big moves feel impossible — too much responsibility, too many people counting on you, too little room for risk — that’s ok.
You don’t need a different life to start moving forward in this one.
You just need one small step. And then another.
That’s how I’ve done it for over two decades.
Small steps lead to big changes — it’s not glamorous advice. But it works.
If you’d like some help figuring out what your small step actually is, I made a free guide for exactly this.
How to Stop Waiting and Start Moving Forward walks you through my Tiny Tweaks Method — a simple three-step process to get unstuck without blowing up your life.
It starts exactly where you are.
