Feeling stuck and unmotivated? Try this one small experiment

Feeling stuck and unmotivated even though everything in your life looks fine on the surface?

Sometimes the way forward isn’t a big life change — it’s a small experiment that helps you reconnect with what feels alive again.

Lately I’ve been wondering: what the hell am I doing with my life?

I mean nothing is technically wrong.

My work is good. My relationships are good.

And my days are “fine.”

Yet lately I’ve felt a little…stuck and unmotivated.

thoughtful woman looking out window reflecting quietly on being stuck and unmotivated in lifeI’ve been inside working on my own a bit too much. And my energy feels low.

I’m not exactly unhappy — I’m just not lit up.

And that’s when my brain did what brains sometimes do.

It ramped thing up.

It went from “I’m kind of bored” to…

“Is this all there is?” to…

“Have I completely missed my life’s purpose?”

(Isn’t it amazing how quickly we can go there? 🤦‍♀️)

When You Feel Stuck and Unmotivated But Life Looks Fine

Sometimes feeling stuck and unmotivated doesn’t look dramatic.

Nothing’s falling apart.

From the outside, everything seems perfectly fine.

But internally, something feels flat.

Beige.

A little lifeless.

That quiet feeling can make your brain start searching for big answers — or wondering if something is fundamentally wrong.

But often it’s simply a signal that a part of your life wants a little movement again.

Why Feeling Stuck and Unmotivated Doesn’t Mean You Need a Big Life Plan

So I went looking for something to perk me up.

I landed on an episode of The Mel Robbins Podcast where she interviews Dave Evans and Bill Burnett — the professors behind Stanford University’s most popular course: Designing Your Life.

(I’ll link to the podcast below. It’s definitely worth a listen.)

They were talking about how most of us think we need clarity before we can move forward.

A big vision. A plan. A reinvention.

But what they actually teach is small experiments.

Try something. Notice how it feels. Adjust.

And repeat.

As I listened, I had this funny realization…

Ohhhhh. This is what I do.

I help women notice what feels alive — and take one small, do-able step towards it.

To try something.

See how it feels.

And tweak as you go.

No dramatic leaps. Just tiny, micro movements.

Small Experiments That Help When You Feel Stuck and Unmotivated

Then I remembered something else.

Last year when I was feeling stuck and unmotivated I tried my own small experiment.

I signed up for pickleball lessons at my local rec centre.

I didn’t need a vision. Or a five-year plan.

I just knew I wanted to move my body, have some fun, and be around people more.

And that one small decision led to so much.

Playing outside in the park all through spring, summer and fall — even on a few warmer winter days.

Fresh air. Exercise.

And a whole new group of friends.

All because I experimented. And followed my intuition.

One Small Step That Shifted My Energy

So the other day, while listening to Mel’s podcast, I asked myself:

What’s one small shift that would help me feel more alive right now?

My answer?

Connection. Movement. Water.

So I signed up for an aquafit class.

10:45am next Wed morning.

That’s it.

No big life overhaul.

Just me, getting into my bathing suit. And slipping into the cool water at my local pool in the middle of my weekday.

The minute I registered, I felt…

Relieved. 😮‍💨

That quiet click of being back in the driver’s seat of my life.

Because sometimes stuckness is a signal.

That a part of your life needs a small nudge back towards aliveness.
