Fill your cup first: finding joy in small, simple moments

There’s something about a chai latte that always brings me home to myself.

The warmth, the spices, the way it makes you slow down for just a moment.

I had one recently with one of my besties — our usual catch-up that turns into a deep, soul-level check-in.

The kind of conversation, with someone you trust, that leaves you feeling lighter.

Like you’ve just let go of something you didn’t even know you were holding onto.

There’s something sacred about those friendships — the ones that hold space for both the laughter.

And the silence.

We’ve seen each other through so many versions of ourselves.

And every time we meet, it feels like a reminder that authentic connection is one of the purest forms of joy.

It reminded me how often joy shows up in the small, simple things.

A few days later, I had another chai latte — same order, different café — this time with my new friend Britt…

Kerry and Britt on the Vancouver waterfront, a reminder to slow down, connect, and savour the small moments
Meeting my friend Britt in person for the first time.

A lovely yoga, meditation, and energy healer visiting from Chicago who I first connected with on Instagram back in 2020.

(Ahhh, the sweet side of social media!)

We spent the morning at a café by the pier, overlooking the Vancouver skyline.

Warm mugs in hand, we talked about life, creativity, and the ways we keep coming back to what feels true.

And the things that make us feel alive.

On the walk home, I realized these heartfelt connections are what I’m most grateful for.

Not the big moments, but the small, quiet, everyday ones that warm your heart.

🧡  That first sip of something comforting.
🧡  A familiar face across the table.
🧡  The feeling of being seen, known, and valued.

And lately, I’ve noticed something…

It’s so much easier to feel joy and gratitude when we’re not running on empty — when we remember to fill our cup first.

When we slow down enough to notice, we start hearing the quiet wisdom inside.

The part of us — our intuition — that already knows what we need next.

That’s where joy begins again.

Not in overcommitting ourselves or doing more, but in remembering who we are beneath the noise.

And giving ourselves permission to fill our own cup first.

So here’s your gentle reminder to:

→  Rest instead of rush.
→  Say no when you need to.
→  Refill your own cup before refilling everyone else’s.

And if you’d like a little help with that, I made something simple and soothing for you…

(It’s kind of like a chai latte in a PDF guide. 😉)

Because you deserve to feel rested, nourished, and at peace — right here, right now.

Which made me think…

Maybe joy isn’t something we chase.

Maybe it’s something we sip slowly — in good company, with both hands wrapped around a warm mug — trusting that what’s meant for us will find its way back in its own time.

With love (and a sprinkle of cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves),

P.S. If you hang out on Instagram, you can find both Britt and me there for more cozy inspiration. Britt’s here — her yoga, meditation, and reiki posts are such a calm corner of the internet. And I’m over here, sharing small reminders to slow down, breathe, fill your cup first, and come back to joy.
