How to reconnect with yourself and find your inner calm

Back in 2004, I was in the middle of a painful separation when I did the unthinkable.

I accidentally left my day-timer in a coffee shop.

OMG, my day-timer. 😮

(remember those?!)

I never got it back.

(as a super organized Virgo with Capricorn rising, I was devastated)

A few days later, I was getting on the elevator in my high-rise apartment, when I dropped my keys…

Down the huge, dark elevator shaft.

Noooooo! 🙈

Looking back, I can see why both mishaps occurred that week.

I’d been feeling scattered. Overwhelmed. And emotionally drained.

I didn’t know it then, but those little moments were big signs…

That I’d lost connection to my center. To myself.

Fast forward to earlier this year…

When I left my condo keys in the outside door overnight.

Just hanging there.

“Hello…come on in and take my stuff!” 😬

(Thankfully, no one did — I have great neighbours!)

The next day, I was halfway across the city, meeting a friend for lunch, when I realized I’d forgotten my purse at home.

No ID. No wallet.

Just me and that familiar ‘wtf’s going on?’ feeling.

(Thank goodness I had my iphone with my apple wallet!)

It was a wake-up call for me though.

I’d slipped back into being disconnected again.

Not being present in the moment.

Not being present in my body.

And not being present with myself.

Until my nervous system (and forgetfulness) made it really obvious.

But here’s what I know now, that I didn’t know back in 2004:

Disconnection isn’t a personal failure. It’s a signal.

It’s your inner wisdom saying:

“Hello…I’ve got you. It’s ok to slow down.”

And slowing down doesn’t have to be complicated.

It can start with something as simple as a breath.

A gentle pause.

A moment of self-compassion.

Instead of self-blame.

If you’ve ever felt this way…

Like you’re overwhelmed, scattered, or forgetting things that seem so basic…

Remember this:

You’re not doing anything wrong.

You’re just being gently called back to yourself.

Back to that wise, grounded version of you.

Who’s still there.

Not lost. Or gone.

Just waiting quietly beneath all the noise.

This is really what learning how to reconnect with yourself is about.

You don’t have to do anything big or dramatic to find her again.

Just take one small, loving step in her direction. 💗
