4 simple steps to overcoming procrastination (without overwhelm)

You know those times when you wanna get something done, but you keep procrastinating?

Cuz you’ve got so many other things to do?

But when you finally get around to doing it (days, weeks, even years later) you say…

“OMG why didn’t I do this sooner?”

Well ↑↑↑ that was me recently.

When my red, upright vacuum cleaner, otherwise known as the Dirt Devil 😈 (which weighed as much as a baby elephant)…

Finally bit the “dust.” (Pun definitely intended!) 🤣

Halle-freakin-lujah…it was time to get a new one!

Problem is, I kept procrastinating.

Not because I didn’t want a new vacuum cleaner.

But because…

I’m not a big fan of shopping for boring sh*t like vacuums!

I can think of a thousand other things I’d rather do with my time — like sorting out my kitchen drawers, reorganizing my closet, or even deleting old photos off my phone!

So it’s no surprise I did nothing! Absolutely nothing — for weeks!

I mean, I planned on buying a new vacuum…

But I just kept avoiding it.

As I watched the dust bunnies in my home quickly multiply (as bunnies tend to do)…

🐇+🐇=🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇🐇

And my “I’m-gonna-keep-avoiding-this-as-long-as-I-can” anxiety grow a long with them.

(Know that anxious feeling?)

But then I hit my breaking point…

Picture this: I’m down on my hands and knees furiously picking (bunny) fluff off my living room carpet before a friend stops by!

Noooooo! 🙈

That’s all the enticement I needed to get off my butt and start the dirt-devil-replacement journey!

And after a few easier-than-expected steps…

Since then, I’ve pulled that small, easy-to-maneuver lil’ baby out and zipped around my home numerous times.

Vacuuming to my heart’s content!

So what’s this got to do with you?

(Cuz I’m guessing you aren’t here to read about vacuums!)

Perhaps you’ve also been procrastinating on something for waaay too long?

  • Like buying that new freezer (cuz the one you have doesn’t freeze your rocky road ice cream anymore)?
  • Or taking those three almost-empty paint cans to the recycling depot (the ones you keep tripping over in the garage)?
  • Or booking your next big vacation, decluttering your home, or deciding whether to start that new business?

Whatever IT is, one thing’s for sure…

If you haven’t taken any action on it yet (but you know you want to), it’s likely causing you some anxiety!

If so, don’t worry, I’ve got you covered. Cuz it’s never too late to get unstuck and moving forward!

Here are four steps to overcoming your procrastination:

① Identify your first step:

Instead of thinking about the entire task, which can be overwhelming, focus on your first “baby step.” Make it as specific and do-able as possible.

(Mine was simply to do some research. That’s all.)

② Decide when you’ll do it:

Commit to a time / day when you’ll take your first step. And stick with it.

(While I don’t enjoy doing research on the internet, I knew I could commit to 15 min of it.)

③ Take the step:

Follow through with your commitment and take the first step when you said you’re going to. You might be surprised at how good it makes you feel. And the momentum it builds.

(My 15 min of research turned into 30 because I felt energized by taking action.)

④ Rinse and repeat:

Once you’ve completed steps 1-3, repeat the process! Keep repeating them, baby step by baby step, until you’ve reached your goal.

(Once I got clear on what I wanted I had my new vacuum purchased within a few days. Mission accomplished!) 😅

When you can break things into bite-sized, manageable steps to overcoming your procrastination becomes much easier.

Tasks that once seemed daunting, suddenly seem less so.

Before you know it, you’ve accomplished the thing you’d been putting off!

And you’re free to focus your energy elsewhere.

Like dancing with your new light-weight vacuum cleaner in the middle of the living room! 💃

(or is that just me?)
